Are You an AI-Proof CRO, Sales VP, or Sales Manager?

As I shared in my sales post about becoming an AI-proof salesperson, AI bots are taking over more tasks across sales organizations every quarter — and not just for sales reps. From pipeline reviews to forecasting, onboarding, coaching, and hiring, many of the traditional responsibilities of CROs, VPs of Sales, and frontline sales managers are being touched by automation and artificial intelligence.
This is somewhat ironic, given that the people who have been investing in sales AI tools to improve sales efficiency and effectiveness may now find their roles at risk themselves as AI evolves for sales teams.
As teams adapt and add AI tools, we are seeing significant right-sizing of sales teams globally. I always watch tech companies as they are often the first to increase the size of their sales teams and the first to downsize and right-size. I just read an article that tech layoffs in July are up 190%.
Having helped teams for 40 years now, it is my experience that other industries will follow.
The question is no longer if AI is coming for parts of your role — it’s which parts, and what will be left for you to master.
So, as a sales leader… Are you AI-proof?
Let’s break it down.
What Sales AI Can Do in Leadership Roles
As I have shared many times less than 50% of salespeople have received formal sales skills training and even fewer sales managers and leaders have received training in skills like coaching, motivation, recruiting, motivation, and pipeline management. The new generation of sales leadership finds AI apps and platforms are surprisingly capable — especially when it comes to data-heavy, process-driven, or repetitive tasks.
Here’s what AI is already doing in the world of sales management and leadership:
Forecasting & Pipeline Risk Analysis
AI can analyze pipeline health across regions, reps, and product lines. It flags risky deals, surfaces patterns, and generates forecast roll-ups faster and more accurately than most manual processes. Accurate sales forecasts are a pain point for many CEOs and CFOs, not to mention CROs. The AI can be taught how to qualify and weight sales deals in your pipeline. It can listen to sales calls and monitor communication between sales and your customers and prospects.
The days of salespeople telling their managers a deal has a 90% close rate based on their gut and industry experience are over. AI will use various levers and offer predictive analytics that will only grow stronger, considering the uniqueness of your industry and type of sale.
Activity Monitoring & Performance Dashboards
No need to manually review rep activity logs or CRM notes. AI can pull insights from calls, emails, and meetings and create real-time dashboards with coaching recommendations.
Sales leaders and managers recognize that coaching is one of the most saleable activities they can perform, yet too few allocate the time it deserves.
Rep Onboarding & Enablement
AI tools can personalize learning journeys based on sales skills assessments, simulate sales scenarios, and assess rep progress with quizzes and live interactions — cutting ramp time and standardizing training across teams.
Call Listening & Coaching Recommendations
AI can review hours of sales calls, summarize them, highlight coachable moments, and score talk tracks — something no human manager has time to do at scale. One of the best ways to assess the skills of your sales team is observation. However, sales managers and leaders are being forced to do much more with less, and call monitoring often decreases or stops altogether. The AI can review the salesperson’s approach and language choice. Was the pace and tone appropriate? Did the salesperson ask great questions and let the customer speak 70% of the time? Did the salesperson deliver your value proposition correctly while connecting it to a customer outcome? Based on the call, what your salesperson said, and what the customer shared, what is the prediction of closing this opportunity? What should we do next? What skills should the salesperson improve based on this interaction and all their interactions?
Hiring & Interview Support
From AI-generated candidate scoring to video interviews with automated analysis of communication style, AI is beginning to support hiring decisions, especially for high-volume SDR roles. We know companies have used resume tools to weed through 1,000’s of resumes to find the best two or three candidates that have the skills and experience for the roles they are wanting to fill. The days of a sales leader and manager interviewing 15 or more candidates is over. The AI will quickly review all resumes and determine which candidates are the best match. ( Often, for job description,s the AI wrote)
But Here’s What AI Will Never Do (Well)
AI is a tool, not a leader. It can guide, inform, gather, and provide insights from piles of data and accelerate decisions — but it cannot replace human leadership that drives culture, performance, and transformation.
Here’s where you are irreplaceable:
Create and Sustain a Sales Culture
AI cannot build belief. It fails to inspire, challenge, or foster a culture of accountability and growth. Great sales teams thrive on human leadership, not dashboards. Top-performing sales teams have sales leaders and managers who foster trust, inspire top performance, and motivate their teams.
Coach Judgment, Not Just Metrics
Coaching isn’t just about talk time or objection handling. It’s about helping reps develop judgment, confidence, and mental agility — something no algorithm can do. Top performing sales leaders have experience and the ability to review and apply critical thinking in the moment.
Lead Through Change
Whether it’s a new GTM strategy, product launch, manager, CRO, or acquisition, AI can’t lead change. It can support the process, but humans lead through uncertainty with empathy and credibility.
Recruit and Retain Top Talent
The best reps don’t stay for comp plans alone — they stay for great leaders. Building trust, mentoring future leaders, and investing in people’s growth is human work. Yes, AI can wade through thousands of emails, but here’s the new challenge: salespeople are using AI to write resumes when they apply for jobs, which an AI wrote, that now perfectly match the job description. Top-performing salespeople stay or go because of their leader.
Strategic Decision-Making
AI can offer data, but strategy requires context, vision, and tradeoffs. Knowing when to pivot a team, double down on a vertical, or rethink your org structure isn’t a spreadsheet exercise.
Building Relationships of Trust
AI can deliver data and provide actionable insights, but it can’t and will never build strong relationships with salespeople, peers in other departments, customers, or suppliers.
How to Become an AI-Proof Sales Leader
To stay relevant — and valuable — in the AI-powered sales organization.
My Advice? You need to lean into the leadership skills machines can’t replicate.
- Coach Like a Pro
Develop your ability to coach the person, not just the performance. Help reps uncover limiting beliefs, refine their thinking, and take ownership of their growth.
- Build a Culture of Curiosity and Accountability
Create an environment where reps ask better questions, take initiative, and hold themselves — and each other — to a high standard.
- Operate as a Strategic Partner to the C-Suite
Translate sales insights into business impact. Build business cases, communicate clearly with finance and operations, and elevate your team’s contributions beyond quota.
- Humanize Performance Management
Use AI to inform your 1:1s — but never replace them. People need feedback, empathy, and vision from leaders who care about their success. We encourage sales leaders to develop performance agreements with their teams and coach them to meet the defined outcomes.
- Embrace AI as an Assistant, not a Threat
The most AI-proof leaders are the ones who leverage AI. Use it to save time, surface insights, and enhance your leadership — not avoid it.
The Future Belongs to Human Leaders Who Use AI, Not Compete with It
If you’re a CRO, VP of Sales, or frontline sales manager, you’re not being replaced. But you will be outpaced if you fail to adapt.
AI will run reports, crunch numbers, and flag issues — but it will never replace a leader who can coach a struggling rep back to confidence, inspire a team to outperform its plan, or rally a department around a new vision.
So ask yourself: Are you AI-proof — or just holding on until you’re replaced by someone who is?
The choice is yours.
