What Levi Strauss Would Do in the “AI for Sales Gold Rush Boom”: A Lesson for B2B Sales Leaders

Having helped companies grow for over 40 years, I have seen every major technology shift creates the same reaction: panic, excitement, and a rush to “figure it out” before everyone else does. The AI for sales gold rush boom is no different. In B2B sales, leaders and sellers are scrambling to adopt artificial intelligence tools, automate workflows, generate content faster, and “keep up” with competitors who appear to be moving faster. (digging faster and deeper but not finding what they really want and need)

As I have shared in several posts about AI for sales, I am observing human behavior, and it is setting off my strategy and sales-experience spider senses. Something does not feel right. Several of the people I am speaking with lately are jumping quickly into tactics without stepping back to develop their AI for sales strategies.

This behavior isn’t new. In fact, we’ve seen it before.

In 1849, the California Gold Rush triggered one of the largest human stampedes in history. Men left their families, sold their farms, quit their jobs, and risked everything chasing the promise of gold. They focused on tactics—how to dig, where to mine, which river might pay off. They worked harder, longer, and more desperately than ever before. And yet, nearly all of them ended up broke.

They weren’t foolish. They were reacting to incentives. They were consumed by the “how” and the pursuit of quick wins, rather than stepping back to understand the bigger picture.

One man did exactly that.

Levi Strauss didn’t mine for gold. He studied people. He observed that the miners were destroying their clothes while digging in mud and rock, so he sold them durable pants. He didn’t chase the opportunity everyone else was chasing. He built infrastructure for the people chasing it. That distinction matters now more than ever.

The AI for sales Gold Rush in B2B Sales is here. What will your sales team do?

Today, the “gold” is artificial intelligence. B2B sales teams are racing to adopt AI-powered CRMs, AI sales assistants, automated prospecting tools, AI-generated emails, AI-driven forecasting, and prompt libraries promising faster deals and higher conversion rates. We are promised that AI for sales will do the continuous prospecting that top sales producers do every year and have done since sales began, but now for anyone in sales (even underperformers). For salespeople not executing the sales motions and behaviors we want and need, we can now invest in an AI for sales bot to ensure they do. Or buy an AI for sales tool to replace them, right?

Salespeople feel pressure to learn the next tool or risk falling behind constantly. As I shared in a recent post, more than 60% of salespeople are not comfortable using the tools in their tech stack today. Why do some B2B leaders believe AI for sales will be different? Business owners and CROs, as well as their PE investment partners, are seeking a sales silver bullet to drive explosive growth in revenue, net income, and enterprise value. Sales has always been a dark art to most; we know what we need, but many do not know how to achieve it, and the number of sales teams not achieving sales goals proves it.

It’s not that we don’t know what to do; it’s getting our sales teams to do it that is the sales problem we need to fix.

With AI for sales, we don’t have to understand how to motivate and manage our sales teams to prospect among current and ideal customers continuously. (That’s the promise, right?)

Just as the miners of 1849 did, most leaders are operating tactically. They’re asking questions like:

Which AI for sales tool is best?

How do I automate more of my outreach with AI for Sales?

How do I scale faster with AI for sales tools?

What AI for Sales Prompts have better conversions?

Those questions aren’t wrong—but they are incomplete.

Tactics expire quickly. AI tools change. Platforms evolve. Models update.

What works this quarter may be obsolete by the next. When B2B sales teams rely on AI for sales tactics without grounding them in principles, strong processes, and sales skills, they create fragile systems that break the moment conditions shift.

Six No Smoke and Mirrors Sales Enablement Predictions for AI for Sales:

Sales teams that tactically invest in AI for sales will be dumbing down their sales skills and, within 12 to 18 months, will be racing to…
Understand their customers
Develop messaging that resonates with their decision makers today
Assess their sales teams for skills like conversational intelligence, active listening, critical thinking, strategic account growth planning, situational awareness, how to build trust and competence, and let’s not forget prospecting, negotiations, follow-up, and closing skills.
The trouble is their efforts to avoid being left behind, which will leave them behind companies that stepped back and developed their AI sales strategy.

Six AI For Sales Predictions:

  1. AI FOR SALES WILL NOT FIX YOUR SALES PROBLEMS.
  1. THE SKILLS SALESPEOPLE NEED WILL NOT GO AWAY_ BUT HOW AND WHEN THEY USE THEM WILL.
  2. ELITE TOP PERFORMING SALESPEOPLE ARE USING AI FOR SALES TO CREATE MORE TIME FOR HAVING CONVERSATIONS WITH CUSTOMERS AND PROSPECTS.
  1. OVER 70% OF SALES TEAMS WITH NEW AI FOR SALES TOOLS WILL SELL AROUND THEM.
  1. WITHOUT SALES TRAINING, HOW TO USE AI FOR SALES, AND HAVING RULES AND GUARDRAILS IN PLACE, MANY COMPANIES WILL LOSE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.
  1. SALES TEAMS WHO LACK FOUNDATIONAL SALES SKILLS WILL PRACTICE POOR SALES SKILLS DUE TO AI FOR SALES HALUSINATIONS AND CREATE BRAND DAMAGE AND REDUCE ENTERPRISE VALUE.

What would Levi Strauss do with the AI for Sales Gold Rush?

Levi Strauss wouldn’t chase the newest AI feature. He wouldn’t try to out-post influencers or out-automate competitors. Instead, he would focus on human behavior—the one variable that hasn’t changed.

In B2B sales, buyers are overwhelmed. Decision-makers are flooded with automated messages, generic AI content, and surface-level personalization. Trust is harder to earn, attention is more expensive, and credibility matters more than ever. AI has amplified noise, not clarity.

The real opportunity isn’t replacing salespeople with AI. It’s building durable systems that help sales teams communicate clearly, consistently, and credibly at scale.

AI should support judgment, not replace it. It should strengthen relationships, not shortcut them.

Just as Strauss sold durable clothing to miners, modern B2B business owners, CROs, and sales leaders should be building durable sales fundamentals—strong sales skills, messaging that resonates with decision makers today, clear positioning, buyer-centric conversations, persona-centric conversations, and repeatable formal sales processes—using AI as leverage, not identity.

Principles Beat Tactics in the AI for Sales Era

Search engines, AI algorithms, and platforms reward consistency, relevance, and trust over time. The same applies to B2B sales. At the same time, tactics like cold outreach automation or AI-generated content may deliver short-term spikes, but principles compound.

Top performing sales organizations that win with AI for sales focus on inputs: understanding their buyers, refining their message, training their people, and building communities around expertise. They use AI to improve efficiency and insight, but they don’t outsource thinking, strategy, or truth.

The companies that lose with AI for Sales are those chasing shiny objects—constantly switching tools, rewriting processes, and reacting to trends instead of committing to a point of view.

The Choice Facing B2B Sales Leaders is Clear for those who Step Back from the clamor of all the AI-for-sales app digging.

The AI boom will widen the gap between the two types of organizations. One group will continue mining—working harder, moving faster, spending and burning out as tactics stop working. The other will step back, apply principles, and build systems that last.

Levi Strauss didn’t get rich because he was early. He won because he understood people better than the crowd.

How well do you understand your people?

Your Customers?

Your Targeted Ideal Customers?

Your salespeople?

The market leaders are conducting voice-of-customer research, gathering data, and planning how they will use AI for sales to meet customer expectations better than their competitors.

AI for sales doesn’t change the need to understand human behavior. It makes it more critical.

For B2B sales leaders, the real question isn’t “How do we use AI faster?” It’s “How do we use AI in a way that strengthens trust, clarity, and long-term growth?”Those who answer that question correctly won’t need to chase gold.

For B2B Business owners, PE partners, and CROs, stepping back, gathering insights, and developing strategies to leverage AI for sales to meet their growth objectives will thrive.

They’ll sell the shovels.

They will equip their sales, customer service, and marketing teams with actionable insights and AI for sales tools to improve the customer experience.

What about everyone else?

They will continue to invest time and additional funding in the latest AI-powered sales tools. They will likely lose more customers, enterprise value, and their top sales performers to market leaders who use AI for sales as a sales and customer experience amplifier, not a sales rep replacement tool.

How are you planning to use AI for sales?
Are you digging for AI New App gold, or are you stepping back to interview your customers and prospects now?
