Ten Steps to Follow When Salespeople Need a Strategic Sales Reset
Sales Challenge: You Missed Your Sales Plan. Your Goal Went Up This Year. Nothing Is Working. Now What? You Need a Strategic Sales Reset. ( ASAP!)
Let’s say it straight. You missed last year’s number. This year’s goal went up again. You’re working more hours than ever. More calls. More emails. More follow-ups. You’ve tried new techniques, new talk tracks, a new CRM workflow, maybe even AI tools. The “marketing-qualified leads” go nowhere; they are wasting time, but marketing and your manager want reports on how they went. And nothing is changing. You are not a quitter; you are a top performer who has won three presidents awards in your career. What should salespeople do when everything they are doing is not working this year? You need a strategic sales reset.
That’s not a motivation problem.
That’s a strategy problem.
When effort increases, and results don’t, the issue is rarely activity. Its direction.
You don’t need to work harder.
You need a strategic sales restart.
You need a strategic sales reset.
I have helped salespeople grow their skills and hit and often exceed sales plans for years. Several salespeople and leaders call me to check in. I enjoy catching up, hearing how they applied our training, and keeping a pulse on B2B sales today.
This year, I am hearing something much different in their voices: fear and anxiety. Every year, as salespeople, we get new goals. It’s a part of the job. Sadly, most of us are given a goal and told to “figure it out, that’s what I pay you for,” and we often do what has worked in the past. If the goal is much larger than before, we decide to do more.
There is a fear in their voices I have not heard before. More pressure; we can’t fail again this year, they say. Some are already planning to leave their companies for perceived greener grass with competitors. Some say they will go through the motions, hoping something happens before they are let go.
If you are in sales and what you have always done to be successful is not working, I wrote this based on several coaching calls I have had over the last few weeks to help you.
Recently, I wrote a post to help CROs remove blind spots hurting their growth strategies, and today I am writing to help salespeople struggling to meet their plan.
Before I share the steps, I recommend resetting your mindset and understanding of how your body works to get your sales results back on track. I want to share something about our bodies and fear.
The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology — Fear of Failure and Avoidance Motivation shares…
A study on motivational psychology found that when individuals are driven primarily by fear of failure rather than desire for success, they:
-
Avoid challenging conversations
-
Avoid reaching out to new prospects
-
Short-circuit follow-up and qualification
-
Lose confidence in negotiations
This contributes to lower quotas being met and a higher incidence of stalled opportunities.

How Are Stressed and Fear Filled Salespeople To Make a Strategic Sales Reset?
God gave us an amazing gift in our bodies. Everyone is strategically wired to help us and help us help others. If we feel attacked or afraid, our body rushes blood from the critical thinking part of our brain to the part of the brain where fear and anxiety are found, called the amygdala. Here, we have only three choices: Freeze, Fight, or Flight. The creative problem-solving part of our brain shuts off until the danger is over. Unfortunately, many salespeople start asking themselves questions and engage in self-talk that does not help the situation.
“What was my CRO thinking, giving me this goal when, as a team, we missed the goal last year?”
“I am already selling all I can to my customers.”
“New customers? ..we can’t ship what I sold last year.”
“Other people on the team missed the goal last year; it’s not me.
“Maybe I should go to our competitor, they have been after me for years.” ( Flight Response)
If you stay in this fear-filled, afraid zone too long, you start hearing things like:
They never appreciated me around here.
There is no way I can hit this year’s number.
How am I going to tell my spouse my income will be lower this year?
We could lose the house. ( actual conversation this week)
How can I tell the kids no vacation this year?
Maybe I am not cut out for sales anymore, with all the market changes, AI, and annual goals going up…
The last thought is the one I am hearing now. It is a lack of confidence. It shows they no longer trust their abilities and processes (often their company and its leaders).
The keys to sales success are skills, process, beliefs, and confidence.
When what we are doing isn’t working, we trust our training and processes. However, when our training, tools, and processes fail, what should we do?
We must have a strategic sales reset.
If you are thinking any or all of the above, you are not alone, and there is a way, steps if you will, for my sales engineers, to follow that will regain your confidence and get you back on track with results like the top performer you are!
What steps do I coach salespeople to take in their strategic sales reset?
Step One: Stop Adding. Start Subtracting.
When results lag, most salespeople pile on more. More accounts. More verticals. More outreach. More experiments. But when everything feels urgent, nothing gets focus.
The first move is subtraction.
Cut your territory in half — at least mentally. Identify the 20–30% of accounts most likely to generate real revenue. The rest becomes secondary.
Growth rarely comes from spreading yourself thinner. It comes from concentrating where probability is highest.
If you’re exhausted, it’s usually because you’re chasing too much with too little return.
Step Two: Diagnose, Don’t Guess.
You missed last year. Why? Not the surface answer. The real one.( it’s just us)
Was the pipeline too small?
Did you follow your sales process or take shortcuts?
Did you conduct discovery and qualifying, or were you too quick to quote?
Were deals stalling late or early?
Did you sell value or default to price?
Were you calling the right decision-makers in the organization or just one?
Did you consistently follow up and ask for the order?
No-smoke-and-mirrors Hard truth: most missed plans are pipeline math failures or deal quality failures — not effort failures.
Pull your last 12 months apart. Look at conversion rates. Look at the cycle time. Look at the average deal size. Patterns don’t lie.
If you don’t diagnose the root cause, you’ll keep treating symptoms… you’ll keep running on the hamster wheel and getting nowhere fast.
Step Three: Reset Your Target.
Many reps say, “My number is too high.“ Maybe it is. But your territory still has potential somewhere. ( I promise you, our research shows it over and over again) You need a micro-strategy.
Where specifically will growth come from in your Strategic Sales Rest?
Existing customers?
New logos?
A specific vertical?
A specific problem you solve better than competitors?
You cannot hit a bigger number doing random acts of selling.
You hit it by making a clear decision: This is where my growth will come from.
Until that’s defined, your activity is noise.
Step Four: Rebuild Pipeline With Intent, Not Volume.
If nothing is working, your messaging is probably generic, or your value proposition is outdated.
Prospects don’t respond to effort. They respond to relevance.
Stop leading with product.
Stop leading with features.
Stop leading with “just checking in.”
Start leading with business problems and missed outcomes.
No-Smoke-And-Mirrors Hard Truth: If you can’t clearly articulate the financial or operational cost of inaction for your buyer, you don’t yet have a message strong enough to generate meetings.
Before you send another email, ask:
Would this make me curious if I were them?
If not, rewrite it.
Step Five: Slow Down to Speed Up.
When pressure rises, salespeople rush the discovery process. They jump to a solution. They quote too early. They are not 100% focused on the current conversations; they are thinking about the last meeting or the next one. That kills margin, elongates cycles, and decreases close rates.
Strong growth years are built on deeper qualification, not faster pitch slapping.
Ask better questions.
Push for decision criteria.
Clarify who else is involved.
Define the cost of delay.
No-Smoke-And-Mirrors Hard Truth: Deals don’t close because you sent a quote. They close because the buyer believes change is necessary.
Step Six: Audit Your Time.
You say you’re working harder than ever. On what? Research shows, and I see it in my coaching, salespeople are spending less than 22% of their sellable time selling. So what are you doing? I ask my coaching clients to make a list each day.
Track your time honestly for two weeks.
How much is spent on:
- Low-probability accounts?
- Administrative cleanup?
- Reacting instead of initiating?
- Servicing small deals that don’t move the needle.
- Social media
- Researching prospects
- Talking with other disgruntled salespeople on your team
- Sales meetings
- Calls from other company leaders
- Calls with your sales manager
- Chasing payment
- Dealing with quality problems
- Finding new ship dates for orders that did not ship when we promised
No-Smoke-And-Mirrors Hard Truth: Growth years are built by protecting time for high-value activities — pipeline creation and strategic deal advancement.
Everything else is secondary.
Step Seven: Get Coached — Don’t Hide.
When numbers are missed, ego gets loud. Reps withdraw. They avoid deeper deal reviews because they don’t want scrutiny. They miss their coaching calls because of a “key customer call” and never make it up.
That’s exactly backward.
You need someone to tear apart your pipeline logic.
Where are you assuming?
Where are you single-threaded?
Where are you relying on “hope” instead of proof?
Where do your deals go and die?
Is your process outdated?
The fastest turnarounds happen when reps allow someone to challenge their thinking, and managers train in coaching skills deliver value.
No-Smoke-And-Mirrors Hard Truth: Isolation prolongs slumps.
Step Eight: Go Back to Fundamentals.
When tools fail, fundamentals win.
Can you:
-
Clearly define your ideal customer.
-
Explain the business problem you solve in one sentence.
-
Quantify value?
-
Navigate stakeholders?
-
Create urgency ethically?
If not, AI for sales won’t save you. A new CRM won’t save you. A new script won’t save you.
No-Smoke-And-Mirrors Hard Truth Mastery of basics compounds. Shortcuts don’t.
Step Nine: Set a 90-Day Reset Plan.
You cannot fix a missed year overnight. Break the year into a 90-day execution sprint.
What pipeline must exist in 90 days?
What accounts must move stages?
What new conversations must start weekly?
Focus on controllables.
No-Smoke-And-Mirrors Hard Truth: Pressure shrinks when you operate in shorter horizons.
The No Smoke and Mirrors Truth About a Strategic Sales Rest
If you’re working harder than ever and results aren’t changing, you don’t need more hustle; you need a strategic sales reset.
You need clarity.
Clarity about where growth will come from.
Clarity about why you missed.
Clarity about what must change in how you sell.
Sales slumps don’t reverse with motivation speeches or performance improvement plans. ( PIPs)
Sales Slumps reverse with disciplined focus and execution.
Stop adding noise.
Diagnose the real issue.
Choose a focused strategy.
Execute fundamentals relentlessly.
That’s how salespeople hit growth goals when nothing seems to be working.
Not by doing more.
A Strategic Sales Reset is about doing the right things — repeatedly — until momentum returns.
If you find yourself in a sales slump and want to get out of it, use the ten steps above.
Let’s schedule a call if you need coaching and don’t feel comfortable sharing your concerns with your manager.
Let’s schedule a call if you are a sales manager or leader, and you need to create a plan to drive explosive growth when it feels like your team is in a sales slump.
Last thought…I promise. You are successful, strong coragous and talented. You are destined for greatness!
Our Lord did not give you the spirit of fear. In 2 Timothy 1:7, God does not give a spirit of fear (timidity or cowardice), but rather a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind (self-discipline). This scripture indicates that fear, which paralyzes or causes doubt, does not originate from God, but is countered by the Holy Spirit’s gifts.
